What is your ideal Magic System? If you were to write a book with Magic, how would you organize it? What is Magic? Where does it come from? What determines who can use it? Are there any restrictions on its usage?
Be creative, people.
I'll post mine later, when it's not nine o'clock.

Agreed. My answer would probably be pretty stupid.

Most systems I have seen have magic that is either a.) innate, b.) acquired (by studying), c.) bestowed by another, d.) transferred from enchanted objects, e.) divided by color (as in the white and black magic dichotomy), or f.) performed through some language.
It would be interesting to write magic that is restricted to certain areas of the realm/world. There could perhaps be some powerful magical beings that live in those areas too, alongside the people who practice magic; though, there doesn't have to be.
Magic can only be accessed and performed in those specified areas, and it is depleted when all the magic is 'used up'. I know it doesn't have the same gravitas as the Harry Potter books and other series do, because in those cases, magic is a mostly unlimited thing. This system, however, may present more obstacles for the plot.
I said it would be interesting to write, but I'm not sure if I myself would enjoy writing that.

Ooohhh, cool. I haven't heard one like that before. The only thing I've written that relies heavily on its Magic System is Archetypes, but the system is fairly generic. Its only thing it really has going for it is that I fleshed it out A LOT. Here's pretty much everything I have on it: www.evernote.com/shard/s376/res/c5a2bad7-8520-4943-981a-703b205781a3/Magical_Theory.pdfIf I were to try to come up with a really unique Magic System, I think I would base it off the internet, actually. It would be very subtle, not-flashy magic that relies on the mind. So just how networks are connected over the internet and can send and receive information, so can minds. And just like the internet, you can kind of send information (memories, knowledge, images, sights, sounds, etc) out into the open for people to stumble across. But there would also be the magical equivalent of 'hackers' who try to break into people's minds. And so you have to set up your defenses or contract somebody else to set them up. And just how devices can share information in their own little bubble/group over a network, so can people. So if you have a group of friends, information can be shared freely between you. And so there's like a black market for stolen information, and certain people you can hire to retrieve the information that you want. Or protect the information you need protected. So, basically, extreme occlumency and legilimency.

Nice, I've always loved the mind arts -underrated but very valuable when honed. I think by using the analogy of the Internet, and making it glaring (if you ever do write this), helps to make the story modern. It's cool, because whenever we see magic, it's normally always applied in the past or some ancient world. Even though Harry Potter took place in the 90's, it felt like it was longer ago, because of how isolated the world was.
As a side note, I think that if there was one thing I could change about the series, it would be to not have them so damn separated from the real, 'mundane' world. The wizards have not had the radical social change that we've as a world, experienced. No World Wars or industrial revolutions.
It's sad.
And as a result, they are unprepared for war. Even after the First Wizarding War (mind you, they've had past battles, too, but whatever), they did not institute a system or protocol to be prepared, or better yet, prevent it from ever occurring again.
Ahem, anyway, I like your unique (as far as I know) magic system. I'll also check out that magical theory pdf sometime.
