I have honestly been over-the-top excited at the new Thor...I saw the trailer and
I've spent hours -nay days- like Sleeves and legions of other fans thinking up how Loki could exploit his innate mischievous ways for the better, translating it into fanfiction, reading fanfiction, rewatching Thor, and spamming my followers on Tumblr by raiding the Loki tag. I would say I'm sorry.
But I'm not if truth be told.
So, Sleeves said how other people are saying Loki will betray Thor, do something heroic, and/or die. These are very feasible speculations, but think about where we last saw Loki. He was defeated by the Avengers in New York and judging by his last few lines of dialogue, he wants vengeance. I don't think he'll make a complete 180 degree turn, but I do think after he realizes he'll never rule Earth with the Avengers around, he'll begrudgingly ally with Thor and the Asgardians. But for a price. I don't know what Thor could promise him, but I'm fairly sure it's not the throne (I know, I know it sucks).
As the God of Mischief, I think he will betray Thor at first, but as the story goes on, he will start to really be on his side. Since this is the last film with Loki, there has to be SOME character development and I have reason to believe it relates to his relationship with his brother. It's just logical, people. Who knows? Maybe he'll patch things up and abandon his resentment towards his family and make Odin proud, but at the same time, stay true to his devious character. Who wants an OOC Loki?
I really doubt Loki will die. Joss Whedon doesn't kill characters unless necessary (Coulson died to fuel Captain America and the others into working as a team). However, it doesn't immediately rule out some sort of unfortunate demise for him.
As for the girlfriend thing, it is highly unlikely Loki will get a mate or whatever theAssgardians Asgardians call it, but I foresee a LOT of Loki-esque, subtle flirting and a LOT of mind games. Whoever she is, if there is a she, I hope she is a BAMF who is equipped to handle him.
Anyway, I want to take this opportunity to analyze one of my favorite fictional villains (and throw in my own prediction).
Taking into account Sleeves' little prediction/recap thing, OH MY GODS. I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THAT. That would be a good reason for him to die....it would be character development for Thor in the upcoming Avengers II. I do like the sound of Loki saving the day at the end!
"Then he will be reincarnated as Severus Snape." Sleeves, words cannot describe how perfect this is.
In regards to the mythological aspects of Marvel's portrayals, I have nothing to comment only because I am unversed in Norse mythology. Sorry bout it.
But I'll trust your judgement.
And as for you saying Odin is depicted as Gandalf, let me say this. I feel like it is now a trope, given that a lot of literary/film works with even the slightest fantastical elements feel it is an obligation to have a bearded, wise old mentor. Not that I don't love Gandalf (hell yeah Ian McKellen).
