Excuse me, it may take me a minute to recover from my nerdgasm.
...ok, I'm good.
HOLY SHIT. THOR 2 GUYS. THOR 2. FINALLY.
This trailer looks awesome. The dialogue may be slightly uninspired, but it's Thor, so who is complaining? Not I.
You can all probably guess who my favorite character is. He's pretty much the reason I'm posting this.
That's right! Loki!
Loki appears quite frequently in this trailer, much to my (and no doubt your) delight. Now, there have been some predictions circling the interwebs about Loki's role in Thor: The Dark World. Some people are saying he will betray Thor. Most people are saying he'll end up doing something heroic. A surprising amount of fans are predicting his death. And a handful say he'll end up getting a girlfriend. Most bets are placed on Darcy, Jane's assistant.
Oh so many ships passing in the night.
Anyway, I want to take this opportunity to analyze one of my favorite fictional villains (and throw in my own prediction).
First, a brief summary of Loki's past: Odin finds baby!Loki moses-in-the-reeds style and decides to adopt him. Believing he is an Odinson by blood, Loki grows up in the shadow of his perfect (and strangely Aryan) brother, Thor. When it is revealed that Loki is actually the son of Laufey and Fárbauti, two Jötunn, he (quite predictably) does not take it well (let's try to ignore what an idiot Odin is).
When I first watched Thor I thought Loki's reaction to finding out he is adopted was a bit dramatic. And then I realized that Loki's not as young as he looks. He's been alive for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. That's a long time to go before finally finding out that your blood relatives are not who you think they are. It's a long time to be living a lie. And not only does Loki find out that he's adopted, but he discovers that mom and dad (or dad and dad, in some versions) are frost giants (Jötunn), the feared and loathed enemies of the Æsir.
So Loki is understandably distraught, and as a result we see a very human side of him in the first Thor movie. We know why he does what he does, and we understand his (somewhat flawed) reasoning. Some of us even sympathize with him. Loki is powerful and pitiful at the same time. He is constantly treading the line between evil and morally ambiguous. Because of this, we see him as a villain that can realistically be redeemed.
And who doesn't love a good old villain redemption story?
I expect to see one in Thor: The Dark World. And we all know that redemption = death. Also, imagine Thor having to carry the burden of Loki's death into the next Avengers movie. People will eat that up.
Loki will save the day and then die protecting Thor or someone Thor cares about.
I do not think that he will find a love interest in the new movie (sorry Tasertrick and Lokane fans). It seems somewhat unrealistic given the nature of the character. The only reason I can see the producers deciding to give him a lady-friend is because of the fanbase. Tons of fans love Loki and would love to see him with a girlfriend. So many fangirls (and fanboys) have the hots for him themselves. I mentioned earlier that Loki is the perfect blend between powerful and pitiful. I think a lot of girls dig the bad-boy thing because they want to be the one who "understands" Loki. They want to be the ones to nurture him back to health after he gets his ass handed to him by our heroes. And so what if he's a jerkass? Maybe, if you redeem him, he'll be a jerkass to other people for you.
Yeah, good luck getting the genocidal megalomaniac with daddy-issues to fall in love with you (or any of the characters), fangirls (never mind the fact that he's fictional).
NOW FOR MYTHOLOGY.
If any of you know anything at all about Norse mythological canon then you should know how inaccurate Marvel's interpretation is.
The biggest issues that comes to mind are that Loki is not the son of Odin (they are blood brothers) and that Laufey is FEMALE. Also, Odin does not look nearly as badass in the mythology as he does in the movie. In the majority of his incarnations he pretty much looks like Gandalf.
There's also a lot in the original mythology that I find hilarious (and tragic) when applied to Marvel's Loki. Fore instance, when he gave birth to a snake, a wolf and a horse. And let's not forget that time he flew to Jötunheim in that snazzy feather cloak of his. Or when he killed Baldr, Odin's son (who would be Loki's brother in the Marvel universe) and as punishment is tied with the entrails of his son to a rock while acidic venom dripped from a snake above his face. His wife, Sigyn, had to stand there and catch the poison in a basin. Did I mention his other son was turned into a wolf?
ALRIGHT GUYS.
Tell me what you think of the trailer. Are you as excited as I am? Who is your favorite Thor character? Avengers character? What do you think of Loki? Any predictions for Thor 2?
