Since boredom advances and boredom is the root of all evil, no wonder, then, that the world goes backwards, that evil spreads. This can be traced back to the very beginning of the world. The gods were bored; therefore they created human beings.
Soren Kierkegaard
This quote actually doesn't inspire me rather than make me curious. I mean can see how an idle mind could cause insanity, but I just don't see how its the "root of evil" as Soren suggests... I know creating things such as humans can bring about evil, that makes complete sense. All I would think is that boredom can be extremely painful especially if dragged over a long period of time. I don't see myself plotting to take down the government through means of "doing away" with major politicians because I was suffering from boredom. If that plan can be considered evil instead of doing it the easy way. Opinions?

I agree with you, Smoddess. While I can see where boredom -> frustration -> recklessness -> foolishness -> harm I do not believe that it's fair to call boredom the ROOT of all evil. Adolf Hitler did not decide to take over Europe because he was bored. Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich did not attempt to exterminate an entire race because there was nothing better to do. If anything, the fascist phenomenon that is the Nazi party (I use this as an example because it is widely believed to be the epitome of all evil) was born of something completely different. It was born from the passion of an NFJ-oriented paradigm--that is to say, they had too much they wanted to do.

AHH OLA YOU'VE MADE YOUR FIRST POST AHHHHHHHHHHHHH AND I LOVE KIERKEGAARD
Ahem. Anyways, I can see why Kierkegaard thought prolonged periods of boredom can be detrimental, because a person is essentially left to their own devices. For example, in Harry Potter, Sirius Black, alleged mass murderer, was incarcerated in Azkaban for 13 years and during this time, he became insane or at least 'mentally unhinged'. When Sirius escaped in 1994, he was so deranged he used all his energy to find Peter and kill him.
On the contrary, I agree with Sleeves. Boredom is not the irrefutable root cause of ALL evil. That's overreaching and not true. And Sleeves, I like your last sentence. You're right, they did have "too much they wanted to do." I believe productivity is even worse than boredom.
Thanks for the quote Smoddess!
