Personality: Barnabas can be charming when he wishes, but in private he is a cynical, sarcastic, smarmy bastard.
Despite being a powerful politician, he is a door mat for Daedarus and Isadora. Barnabas is willing to do anything for success and acknowledges when someone is more powerful than he (i.e. gets on his knees and worships the ground his superiors walk on).
His parenting skills are atrocious. Barnabas is one of those fathers who treats his children like fellow adults.
He has long ago abandoned common human decency. He's nearly as depraved as his boss.

Barnabas was born in Draunt, the poverty-stricken westernmost district of Elberon, to a primarily Dark family. His father, Elijah Gorrell, was an industrial worker; his mother, Lydia Gorrell née Renwick, was a housemaid for a prominent Light family living in the Byvale district.
Barnabas's parents rarely had time for their children. While their parents were working, Barnabus and his siblings were looked after by their grandmother, Margaret Renwick, who expired in 1974. As a child, Barnabas was often teased by his classmates and older brother Linus for his awkward appearance. His sister, Alicia, was doting and over-indulgent, whereas Jörg was more or less indifferent to his younger siblings.
After seeing how poorly society treated his parents, Barnabas became determined to escape the lower class life he had been born into. Thanks to an excellent memory and work ethic, young Barnabus did exceptionally well in school, and in 1984 went on to study political science and psychology at Freyton University. It is there that he had his first true encounters with Light Magi, and it is there that his bitter resentment for them would take root.
During his third year at University, Barnabas discovered his skill as an orator when he spoke out at a political rally. He spoke for nearly twenty minutes as a spellbound audience gave him their full attention. Here Barnabas also met Daedarus Cain for the first time. Thoroughly impressed by his performance and quick to recognize his talent, Cain, who had organized the rally, took a special interest in the young Dark Mage. Afterwards, Cain easily swayed Barnabas to his way of thinking by giving him a long private audience. He offered to pay for his schooling if Barnabas promised to spy for him after graduating. Barnabas, drowning in debt and unable to find the money to attend law school, readily agreed. Barnabas and Cain would have little correspondence over the next six years.
After completing his doctorate in 1990, Barnabas attended law school for three years and graduated in 1993. He worked for a small law firm for eleven months before resuming his communication with Daedarus Cain in 1994. Using the political connections of Cain's false identity, Hadrian Crane, Barnabas was able to secure himself an influential government position.

Author’s Opinion: Baz is a secondary character but he’s one of my favorites. He’s probably my smartest character, and yet he’s not the most powerful or influential. He’s shamelessly loyal to power, and I love him for it.
