Note: This was made awhile ago, when I was starting to write my novel, Paranexus. I have only written the first chapter, but I will be working on it this summer. I'll be posting soon! This is the profile of the main character. Feel free to skim- I tend to write long outlines...especially for original stories lol. I would really like feedback/suggestions, as I do not want a 'Gary Stu'.. Thanks!
Back to Basics;;
Name: Evander Arcangel
Reasons for/etymology of name: “Evander” is Scottish for “yew bow” and “warrior”, “Arcangel” has no discernible origin, but the closest match is “Arcangelo” which is Italian for “archangel” (this is ironic considering the family masquerades as Catholic)
Nickname/Alias: Codename is “Lexicon” for his eidetic memory
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual (raised in a city that is a conglomeration of people from all over the globe puts things in perspective)
Age: Almost 17
Birthday and Place: Cardiff, Wales (the UK was later demolished)
Nationality: Mainly Welsh, also Scottish and English
Language(s): English, Latin (his parents neglected to teach him his native tongues)
Dialect: English
The Physical;;
Height: 5’8”
Physique: Slight, lean, well-defined muscles
Appearance: Brown-black short hair, pale skin, hazel eyes, angular features, didn’t inherit the ‘strong chin’ of his father
Health Status: No pressing concerns
Style of dress/accessories: Uses Arcangel platinum card system to buy Burberry (it’s a vintage brand in 2062), button-up shirts and khakis (most casual he is going to get), also has a thing for strange scarves
Grooming: Always well-kept, indicative of his upbringing
Gestures: Bad habit of winking and handshaking at visibly awkward moments (he’ll do anything to break the tension), and when he’s calculating or deducing, he will stare for long amounts of time without blinking.
The Mental;;
Personality: Evander is mature, cultured, good-natured, brilliant, perceptive, and ambitious individual. You might think he’s the stereotypical booky introvert, but surprisingly he can talk his way out of many situations. It’s hard to believe, but he is also quite flirty. The all-boys school sort of inspired this streak, since he did not get to socialize with girls before. Sad but true.
Hobbies: Learning about cryptography, philosophy, foreign communications, and the Old World and how it used to be
Strengths: His knowledge, perception, memory, glibness, and tact
Weaknesses: His tendency to blame himself, lack of street-smarts, magnetism to dangerous areas because of his ‘academic curiosity’
Likes: Reading, neatness, routine, individuality, legal system, eavesdropping on his parents, weird ass scarves, Altoids (if you're wondering, no they were discontinued years ago, but let's just say he knows a guy)
Dislikes: Petty thieves, corruption, ill-fitting clothes, tackiness, superficiality, boredom, stupidity, not knowing something, and homes without books (pretty much everywhere, they’re obsolete)
Obsessions/compulsions: Symmetry and equilibrium
Phobias: Abolishment of personal liberties, Thomas Hobbes’ theory of natural state, guns, medical procedures, being watched constantly, and cats (he once threw his friends bunny out the window thinking it was a cat)
Religion: Unitarian Universalist, raised Catholic
Aspirations/career: He was supposed to follow in his father’s footsteps and work for the Daedalus Corporation (D.C.), but it obviously did not happen. He dreamed of attending Cambridge or Oxford, the two oldest and most prestigious schools in the UK, and being a cryptographer for the MI6, the British Secret Service, until that dream was also dissolved. Instead, he forgoes education and becomes the co-pilot for the Paranexus in the Sky Runners, a YR (Youth Resource) ambassador for the Network, and a member of their senior research division.
Desires: The Library of Alexandria rebuilt next to his house, Da Vinci’s original journals, the mass eradication of the feline family
Secrets: The location of his house, affiliations to the Network
Valuable possessions: His personal archives, especially his copies of Immanuel Kant’s Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals and Thoreau's Walden
Relationships;;
Father- Works for the D.C. at a medium rank, but close enough to interact with Dragomir Ivanov, strict and neglectful (after his second son, Everett dies), but is later redeemed, manages to survive the altercation with the pyromaniac that manipulated the prototype zeppelin’s bombing system (this catastrophe is the immediate impetus of the so-called “WWIII” that breaks out)
Mother- Unemployed (her treatment from CLL rendered her too weak to work), still in her mourning period, ignores Evander most of the time, eventually leaves him and her husband, requests Evander set his father straight (this brings the two closer), before the incident, she was a stern yet caring mother, wife, and businesswoman, she was against her husband’s facilitating D.C.’s malevolent aims
Sibling(s): He was very close to his younger brother of 4 years, Everett. He was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) at age 8, was treated, suffered an unexpected relapse 3 years later, and died at 11 due to a flaw in the procedure (hence Evander’s phobia of medical practice).
Romantic: He starts dating another character- a Yet-to-be-named Scottish girl.
Background;;
Financial situation: Malfoy levels of wealthiness (before becoming a government employee, his father was an accomplished diplomat and businessman)
*You might want to skip this next one- it’s boring unless you like ethics philosophy*
Notable Memory: When he was 14, he read a translated edition of Immanuel Kant’s notes on deontology and the categorical imperative (judges morality based on the nature of actions rather than the consequences, as we cannot change the future). It really challenged him to think about fate vs. free will and he decided it was a delicate equilibrium of both. He agreed somewhat with fate, but rejected Kant’s theory that the categorical imperative yields only absolutes, or black or white results (Evander is a strong proponent –ironically- of the gray areas of morality). Even still, Kant remains one of his favorite philosophers.
Past convictions (if any): He declared blasphemy in one of his classes at a Catholic school (in hindsight, it was not the best of his ideas). Of course, his father managed to bribe the dean, Father Winston. A true Malfoy indeed.
Education: He used to attend a Catholic, all-boys prep school, was privately tutored after he dropped out because of the war, and shortly after, Manchester was destroyed, and the family was relocated to the ‘temporary’ city where many different immigrant survivors reside. The problem of not having received a GED was not that big of a deal, because of his family’s wealth and influence and because it is wartime, the job requirements are different. Later, though, Evander does develop a bit of ‘street-smarts’ and is a valuable member of the Sky Runners and the Network.
My apologies for causing any headaches! I promise his character will make a hell of a lot more sense once you read the story.
