Joseph Rime
[September 1st Year 01 10:40 a.m.]
Joseph Rime made sure he arrived early to board the Hogwarts Express. There were multiple reasons for this, not the least of which was that he wanted his parents gone as soon as possible without anyone seeing them. His parents were not what most would call ‘conventional.’ Not even among wizards. Luckily for Joseph, they lacked the decency to wave him off and typically left shortly after he boarded the train.
The other reason was that Joseph wanted a compartment all to himself for some peace and quiet while he read. He wasn’t particularly in the mood for reading, seeing as he only had his school textbooks with him and he had already read all of them at least once, but he had been prohibited from practicing his rites on the train or in the school.
The previous year Joseph had been in the middle of performing a ritual that required a blood sacrifice when a first-year girl had entered his compartment and promptly fainted upon seeing a half-naked boy covered in bloody runes. Their arrival at Hogwarts found Joseph sitting across from an exasperated Eldon Leydenfrost and trying in vain to convince the Headmaster that the blood had been from a rat, not a second-year Hufflepuff, as his peers had insisted.
Thus, on threat of expulsion, Joseph was reduced to rereading his transfiguration textbook for the third time.
Next to him, Lleu Llaw flapped his wings restlessly. Lleu Llaw was a gigantic owl, almost half of Joseph’s size, and the boy’s only true companion at Hogwarts. Besides the ghosts, that is, but they didn’t really count because they were all dead. The other students were, for the most part, apathetic towards Joseph. He was ‘that weird pagan kid who hates the Headmaster.’ He didn’t mind, though. Not really. No friends meant no one to wonder where Joseph was when he didn’t want to be found.
But Joseph had a feeling that, this year, things were going to change.
If he were still attending Muggle school, he would be entering the ninth grade, his first year of high school. A step up in maturity and academic rigor. And he had matured--physically, emotionally and magically.
Not to mention that the riots were picking up again. Joseph had gotten his hands on a copy of the Daily Prophet that morning and had read all about it. The Wizarding World was volatile. Kreios was rallying his forces and the Ministry was tightening its hold and reinforcing its influence in response. All of the tension made Joseph's veins itch with anticipation.
He frowned pensively out the window, brow furrowed and wide mouth drawn into a thin line. Fourth year, he predicted before returning to his reading, is going to be different. And he was not yet sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Kallima Darling [September 1st Year 01 10:40 a.m.] Kallima's family showed up at Platform 9 3/4 early. Their parents said goodbye, wished them well, and promised to write. Then they walked off to take Tammerlane to the conductor and other adult chaperones, to make sure there poor, blind, daughter was situated. Amanda helped Kally get her chest on the train and then slinked off, making it very clear that Kally was not to follow her. And that was how Kally found herself walking from car to car searching for someone to talk to. None of her friends from home appeared to be there yet, so she resigned herself to making a new one. Kally's new kitten paced above her head, before jumping down on her shoulder. Tammy had given it to her for her birthday, and the kitten had really taken a liking to her in the last two days. They had celebrated her birthday early, because she was born on the 3rd, and by then she would be hogwarts. "I'll be a first year", she thought, "isn't that exciting." She looked through a window and saw a boy. He was reading a school text book. "Poor boy," she thought, "he must be bored out of his mind." Kally put on her biggest smile, and flung open the door, determined to make a good impression. "Hello, My name is Kally, well Kallima, but everyone calls me Kally," she said, barely pausing for breath, "What's your name?"

Joseph Rime
[September 1st Year 01 10:45 a.m.]
Joseph jumped, brown eyes wide and owlish, as the compartment door was flung wide open. He blinked stupidly at the young, cheery girl standing before him. It took him a moment to register what she had said. Kallima, her name was.
Joseph looked to his right. Then to his left. And, finally, he twisted in his seat to check if anyone was sitting behind him. He was alone, as he had thought. But certainly this Kally-girl couldn't be talking to him. Nobody talked to Joseph. He allowed himself a moment to assess her, scrutinizing her from head to toe. There was a kitten on her shoulder. Odd...and strangely endearing. He concluded that she couldn't be older than a first year. Which would explain why she had bothered to approach him.
Joseph mused that the socially acceptable thing to do would be to return her greeting. The silence was becoming awkward and Joseph, albeit a strange boy, was neither a nasty nor a rude one. Lleu Llaw hooted encouragingly from beside him.
"Hi," he said sheepishly with a lopsided, slightly forced smile, "I'm Joseph...Rime." He belatedly extended his hand in a smooth motion. "Fourth year," he added for good measure.

Kallima Darling [September 1st Year 01 10:45 a.m.]The boy seemed surprised she had approached him. He glanced around when she spoke, and then slowly looked her over. He was quiet for just a hint too long before he replied. He said his name, Joseph Rime.
Rime sounded familiar to Kally. One of her sisters must have mentioned the boy at some point, but she couldn't remember why.
She finished this thought as the boy extended his hand. He spoke once more, this time saying he was a fourth year.
She shook his hand, saying "Pleasure to meet you Joseph. I'm a first year, but I'm really excited for school. You must really like it learning if your reading ahead already." She motioned to the transfiguration book. "I know Amanda never reads ahead over the summer. You must be very dedicated."

Joseph withdrew his hand, listening attentively as the Kally-girl spoke. Boy, she sure was talkative. But she seemed like an honestly nice person. Too nice, Joseph decided, to be approaching him on a dare.
She mentioned an 'Amanda', and Joseph wondered if she meant Amanda Darling. She and Joseph had never spoken, and he had trouble conjuring a picture of her in his mind, but they were in the same year and had shared potions together.
"Not really," he answered, delicately ear-marking his page before closing the book, "If I had my way I wouldn't be reading a textbook, but I don't really have much of a choice. Most of my reading material comes from the school library." Joseph didn't bother to mention that was because he couldn't afford any other books. He also didn't bother mentioning that by 'school library' he meant the Restricted Section. It had taken hours of bribing and blackmailing and even some grovelling, but eventually he had gotten a pass from the Headmaster...if only because the older wizard was sick of Joseph's pestering.
"Would you like to come in?" Joseph asked after a pause, gesturing to the other side of the compartment with a wide sweep of his arm.

Valentino Larkin
[September 1st Year 01 10:40 a.m.] Valentino Larkin walked to the large, old-as-Merlin train alongside his mother and father. Muggles. The other families sneered and snickered at the parents who gawked at nearly everything they saw. Valen loved his mum and dad, but their naïveté, even after three years of the same routine, was embarrassing. Truthfully, the platform was as magical as things got for them. They have never been to Hogwarts or Diagon Alley (He did his shopping alone, always telling them he was being escorted by an adult. Bollocks.), and during the summers, Valen practiced magic in the privacy of his bedroom. At least, they were accepting, which could not be said for many Muggles.
He checked his old pocketwatch. Valen was early this time, but he still hurried his goodbyes. "Ciao, mamma. Ciao, papà. A presto. E sì, mi ricorderò di scrivere." he said before boarding. The fourth year was greeted by familiar faces and new ones. It was a relief, being able to spend time with people his age, since he was an only child and he didn't have any neighbors. Valen lived in the empty, rural side of Bristol.
He noticed that a majority of the students hadn't yet donned their robes. As usual, he was to be the 'overachiever', dressed in the Ravenclaw uniform. Sighing, Valen scanned the compartments for a vacancy. He didn't mind company, so long as they weren't incorrigible gits. Stupidity was a sin.

Kallima Darling [September 1st Year 01 10:47 a.m.] Joseph seemed pretty open, at least he wasn't pushing her away. People who din't want to talk didn't tend to hide it, and Kally could take a hint. Besides it was pointless to try to make friends with someone who didn't want to be friends. But Joseph was talking to her. Something about books and the library. He really did seem to like reading. Kally heard the invitation to come in. "Yes, of course." Happy seemed to think the invitation was for him, as the kitten jumped down from Kally's arm on to the table. Kally slid into the both across from Joseph. "I don't mean to intrude, I'll be sure to move when your friends get here. So anyway, are you excited for the school year?"
sorry it took me so long to respond, i've been doing christmasy stuff

Joseph Rime
[September 1st Year 01 10:48 a.m.]
Joseph's lips quirked in amusement as the kitten leaped onto the table. He was glad for the company, he supposed. Perhaps it was the Gryffindor in him, but he craved new experiences and a polite conversation with a future peer was certainly a novelty.
"Oh, don't worry about that, I haven't got many friends besides Lleu Llaw here," he reassured. Maybe that wasn't something he wanted to admit, as revealing you have no friends rarely makes for a good first impression, but if Joseph cared what people thought he would have been a Slytherin. Besides, there was no dishonor in being who he was. 'I am what I am' and all that.
"I am. Excited, I mean. Hogwarts is always an adventure. Did any of your family members attend, or are you muggle-born...?" Joseph mentally cringed and hoped she didn't take that the wrong way. He knew that with his withdrawn countenance he could sometimes come off as a snoot when in reality he was just socially inept.

Kallima Darling
[September 1st Year 01 10:45 a.m.]
Joseph said he didn't have any friends. Kally doubted that. Everyone has friends, some people just don't know it yet. Besides Joseph was very pleasant, so it seemed like he he should have some friends besides an owl. You can't talk to an owl. Kally laughed, " No I'm not muggleborn. Not there's anything wrong with that, of course. My Moms a wizard, but my dads a doctor. My Mom doesn't talk about hogwarts much though. Neither do my sisters. Of course Tammerlane can't accually see it to talk about it, and Amanda just isn't much for talking. My Mom says it's cuz she can't get a word in edgewise. I suppose she could be right. But anyway, what's your family like?" Kally hadn't ment to start rambling, it's just that there was so much to say. She felt a little bad, she didn't want to overwhelm him after all.

Joseph Rime
[September 1st Year 01 10:49 a.m.]
So this Kally-girl was related to Amanda Darling. She had to be, since Amanda and Tammerlane Darling were sisters, and even Joseph had heard of the blind girl. A Slytherin and a Ravenclaw for siblings. Interesting. Joseph wondered which Kally would take after. Somehow, he couldn't imagine the sociable first-year ending up in either house. He would bet on Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Joseph momentarily hoped that she didn't end up in Gryffindor so that she wouldn't be able to grow close to him. Then he felt immensely guilty for the thought. She was perfectly nice, it was just...Joseph wasn't ready for friends. Friends get in the way. Right? And yet...maybe it was time for something new...?
"Oh, uh...I'm a muggle-born. Dad is a carpenter and Mum is a waitress. And I have a little sister named Laura. She's kind of a brat, but she's only seven so I guess I forgive her." Joseph was surprised at how normal his family sounded when he left out the bits about Wicca and all the freaky pagan stuff. "So...what house d'you think you'll end up in?"

[September 1st Year 01 10:50 a.m.]
So Joseph was a muggleborn. His life sounded fairly normal. At least his family seemed normal. Kally's family was definitely not normal. There was her blind sister, her sister who seemed to be annoyed with everything, her mother who was always trying to get a scoop, and her father who never seemed to leave the hospital. She loved her family, it was just hard sometimes. Everybody was just so out of sync with each other. They never really listened to each other. "What house? I suppose I never thought about it much. I know I won't be in Slytherin, not that there is anything wrong with Slytherin, I'm just not very ambitious. I don't think Ravenclaw either, I'm probably not smart enough. So I guess that leaves Griffindor and Hufflepuff, but I'm not very brave. And that leaves Hufflepuff. Which I suppose makes sense because I value kindness."Kally wasn't sure she wanted to be a Hufflepuff. Not that she didn't want to be a Hufflepuff, she just wanted to be more then nice. But if she was a Hufflepuff at least she would be what was expected of her. Kindness was very important anyway. "So um…. What house are you in?"

[September 1st Year 01 10:51 a.m.]
Joseph grinned broadly, his first wholehearted smile. "I'm in Gryffindor, but when I first came to Hogwarts I thought I would be a Ravenclaw. It sounded like the nerdy house, so I just figured.... Well, anyway, when I was finally sorted the hat told me there was no other place for me but with the lions."
And yet Joseph still saw a difference between him and his fellow Gryffs. They were all rather obnoxious and hot-headed, whereas Joseph was reserved and, while potentially aggressive if confronted, shrewd. He sometimes wished he had been sorted into Ravenclaw. That way he wouldn't be surrounded by a bunch of jocks and class clowns.
"I think Hufflepuff is a great house. A lot of successful witches and wizards have come from there." He actually couldn't think of many, but he was sure there had to be a ton. It wasn't fair how Hufflepuff was treated as if its members weren't worth anything.

Valentino Larkin [September 1st Year 01 10:52 a.m.] The train hadn't yet started moving, but that didn't lessen Valen's anxiety that he was the only student without a compartment. He had spent ten minutes roaming up and down the aisle with his trunk, searching for someone to sit with. Valen was walking back up when he finally noticed two students on the east side; they looked fairly...decent. Sure, the girl may have seemed overzealous but that was better than unwelcoming. The boy across from her appeared smart somehow. Valen couldn't explain it, but there are just certain people in the world that exude intelligence, and he was one of them. He slowly rapped his knuckles on the clear door and waited.

Kallima Darling [September 1st Year 01 10:53 a.m.] Kally was about to respond to Joseph's statement about Hufflepuffs when she heard the rapping at the door. The boy looked to be the same age as Joseph. He looked nice enough. So Joseph did have friends. This boy obviously wasn't looking for her, so that left Joseph. Kally motioned to the boy. "Well, Come on in."

The boy standing in the doorway was Ravenclaw. He looked vaguely familiar. Joseph had no doubt that they had shared a handful of classes together over the past three years. Jo just...wasn't good with names. Or people. Or societal norms. Nothing to be ashamed of. Really.
Joseph could feel his face slipping into a frown before immediately correcting it, so as not to appear rude. He really needed to work on controlling his facial expressions if he wanted to start actually being social (insert shudder here) this year.
"Yeah, make yourself at home...Mate." That was how normal blokes addressed each other, right? Right?
