I conceived the idea for this book less than a day ago. I had scratched out my initial idea of the inner workings of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. I just couldn't get into the idea of seven Romantic intellectuals talking all day. Still, I kept that secret society interest alive with the Majestic 12.
Here's some background, taken directly from Wikipedia. Enjoy.
"The Roswell UFO incident took place in the U.S. in June or July 1947, when an airborne object crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Explanations of what took place are based on both official and unofficial communications. Although the crash is attributed to a secret U.S. military Air Force surveillance balloon by the U.S. government,[1] the most famous explanation of what occurred is that the object was a spacecraft containing extraterrestrial life. Since the late 1970s, the Roswell incident has been the subject of much controversy, and conspiracy theories have arisen about the event.
The United States Armed Forces maintains that what was recovered near Roswell was debris from the crash of an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon belonging to what was then a classified (top secret) program named Mogul. In contrast, many UFO proponents maintain that an alien craft was found, its occupants were captured, and that the military engaged in a massive cover-up. The Roswell incident has turned into a widely known pop culture phenomenon, making the name "Roswell" synonymous with UFOs. Roswell has become the most publicized of all alleged UFO incidents."
Now, you're wondering: how does the previously mentioned Majestic 12 tie in? Prepare for my Wikipedia appropriation.
"Majestic 12 (or MJ-12) is alleged to have been the code name of a secret committee of scientists, military leaders, and government officials, formed in 1947 by an executive order by U.S. President Harry S. Truman. The purpose of the committee was stated in the Wilbert Smith memo (see below) to have been to investigate the slew of reports of "flying saucer" sightings that were then being received by U.S. military intelligence and in particular to look into the possible physics and technology of propulsion of the aerial objects that were being reported. The formation of the committee is, because of the timing, widely believed to have been precipitated by the recovery of a UFO north of Roswell, New Mexico during June/July 1947."
I've always been interested in the Roswell Crash - mainly because I have an overactive imagination - so I will be writing a historical/science fiction novel that posits an alternate history, a "what-if" scenario. What if the United States government hadn't covered it up as nicely as they would've liked? What if the alien race was looking to usurp Earth? And they were intent on making their presence known?
Why would the race want to dominate Earth, you ask? Well, it's not merely to demonstrate their superiority over humans (as it's a given), but rather to their opponent - some other race I have yet to come up with. Once allies, these two planets are having their own Space Race - they chose Earth randomly as the planet to land on and subsequently conquer. This hints obviously at the upcoming technological competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union (eight years from when the story occurs). In this alternate history, I want to explore how the U.S. and Soviet Russia are affected: do they form a pact or continue their cold war? How do they respond to the encroaching alien races?
Regarding the unnamed protagonist (MC), she will be the new leader of race II, the one competing against the first race for control of Earth. She is not the daughter of the recently passed away Chief, but she is the one chosen for succession; however, MC does not agree with conquering another peaceful planet, especially one with a race that cannot properly defend itself. Race I gets to Earth first with their superior technology, and somehow MC manages to catch up on her own. She is the only one from her race that reaches Earth.
As for any romantic subplots, I've thought about it and for the purpose of this story, i believe it would distract. So no. It will be primarily gen, unless I find a way where it can work. Maybe the alien MC finds a hot human boyfriend in the shape of a translator (Avatar, much?).
Hehe, just kidding. This isn't Doctor Who.
Furthermore, I already have a plot twist in mind, buuuttt I think I'll keep it a secret. *winks*
